Age of parent:
32

Child’s name:
Lucien

Age: 4

Is this your only child?
Yes

Diagnosis of child:
Mosaic Down syndrome

What are the biggest challenges facing your child on a daily basis?
He is 4 years old and is not able to talk yet, which poses huge daily challenges, especially when he is ill or hurt. He also gets very frustrated with me when I don’t understand what he needs and wants. He is a very sociable little boy, but cannot go to school to play with friends because his immune system is severely compromised and he gets sick very easily - he cannot even be around children who has the slightest of colds.

What are the happiest moments you have with your child on a daily basis?
Lucien loves the water, so anytime we spend together swimming or being on the beach is always very special for us. Putting Lucien to bed in the evenings is also one of my favourite times of the day with him, he loves to cuddle.

Are you a single parent or married?
Single mother

Has your special needs child had an effect on your marriage?
N/A

What has your child taught you about yourself, both positively and negatively?

Positively:
He has taught me to never give up, even when the odds are stacked against you. He has taught me about unconditional love, patience and to trust in God with all my heart. Each day presents with a new challenge, no 2 days are ever the same with Lucien. I have learnt to expect the unexpected.

Negatively:
He has highlighted my lack of patience and that I am not invincible. I need the help of others even when I am too proud to ask!

Are your family and friends supportive?
Yes, extremely. I could not go through this without the love and support of our family.

Do you take time out, if so what do you do to relax?
Not really, as I am a single parent. I do try to take afternoon naps with him to recharge my batteries and an occasional outing on my own!

What has made the biggest difference to your child’s quality of life?
An expert medical team, my family’s support and nurturing and friends who accept and love us.

What is your dream for your child?
To bring hope to other special needs families by showing how you can face and overcome challenges but most importantly for Lucien to live a happy, wholesome, fulfilling life!
